Shorts hooks are the hardest craft on YouTube. You have less time than a Reels hook, less audio-context than a TikTok hook, and viewers are usually 3-swipes into a doomscroll when they land on you.
The five underlying patterns
1. Personal-stake specificity. “Your salary,” “your job,” “your brain.” Instantly makes the viewer the subject.
2. Fear-adjacent framing. “About to lay you off,” “red flags,” “why you can’t focus.” Not fear-mongering — surfaces a real concern the viewer probably has.
3. Compact-commitment hook. “30 seconds,” “60 seconds,” “one habit.” Low activation energy, high promised return.
4. Demographic filter. “If you’re over 30,” “if you make less than $100K.” Loses broad audience, keeps focused audience. Instagram-Reels patterns work almost identically here.
5. Regret / hindsight hook. “Nobody warned me,” “what I’d tell my 20-year-old self.” Curiosity gap + implicit authority.
What kills Shorts
- Slow visual openings
- Self-introductions
- Vague setups (“today I want to talk about”)
- Mismatched trending audio
- No caption in the first 2 seconds (many viewers watch muted)
For faceless Shorts specifically
Faceless Shorts have to work harder on the visual because there’s no personality signal. Use:
- Extreme close-ups on subject (money, phone, book, product)
- Bold on-screen text within the first frame
- One clear visual concept per Short — don’t cram
